PE & Games

Sport is at the heart of Hereford Cathedral School. The philosophy of developing and nurturing talented young men and women in a wide range of sports has won the school an excellent reputation both locally and nationally. The Department is proud to offer a vast array of sports clubs that allow every pupil to achieve their full potential. The belief is that promoting a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle provides pupils with the knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm for a lifelong involvement in sport and physical activity.

Years 7-9

The Department places a huge emphasis on fostering the pupils’ natural enthusiasm. As well as the major sports of rugby, football and cricket/athletics for boys and hockey, netball and cricket/athletics for girls, all pupils in Years 7 to 9 have the opportunity to try a plethora of other sports and activities.

Pupils also have the option to join the HCS Boat Club from Year 9, with rowers going on to compete in local, regional and national school regattas to great success.

Clubs are run before and after school for all pupils wanting to discover and develop their potential in many of these sports.

GCSE course

The GCSE course is 60% practical and pupils are assessed in four activities from at least two groups. As well as player/performer, pupils can be assessed as organiser/leader/coach/choreographer or official. The theory (30%) is a 1.5 hour question paper which includes the areas of psychology, physiology, anatomy and sociology. There is also a controlled assessment (10%).
