Art and Design

The aim of Art and Design in the Junior School is to develop creativity and imagination whilst fostering a sense of personal achievement and confidence in each pupil’s ability. Pupils are encouraged to experiment and expand on their knowledge of materials and techniques using a variety of artists as their inspiration.

Co-curricular

A London Art and Drama Trip occurs every two years and incorporates two gallery visits and a West End show.

Drama sets for the Year 6 play are produced within the Art and Design department and elements of Year 3 Humanities are covered in Art and Design. During the year, there is also Pottery club, DT club and Cookery club.

Senior School Links

There are meetings each year between the Junior and Senior School departments to discuss the work produced in DT.

Pre-Prep and Year 3 to Year 6

A new Year 1 curriculum has recently been compiled in conjunction with the Pre-Prep Art co-ordinator. We follow the QCA with the flexibility of incorporating topic work to strengthen pupil’s knowledge. Pre-Prep teachers teach Art and DT to their own forms in their classroom.

Years 3 to 6 are taught Art and DT by Mrs Gummerson, an Art and Design specialist, in the Buttery, which houses a well-equipped Design and Technology room, Art room, pottery kiln and food technology area. Each term contains at least one Art project and one Design and Technology project.
