Examination Results 2011
We are celebrating another set of excellent exam results at both A-level (1 in 4 grades was an A*) and GCSE (1 in 3 grades was an A*). Once again our students have achieved, by some distance, the best results in Herefordshire and beyond. Perhaps this is no surprise given the small class sizes, the expert tuition given by experienced and well qualified teachers who give generously of their time, the co-operative relationships between students and staff, and the joy and relish with which our young people approach their studies.
A-level
At A-level over half of all grades achieved (59.5%) were either A* or A, and over three quarters of all grades achieved (79%) were at least a B or above. The benchmark grades of A*-B, as used by the most competitive universities, were achieved by more than half our students in all their subjects, and 28 students gained all A* or A grades.
An impressive 25.7% of all grades were at the new A* level. Six students who achieved three or more A* grades were Charles Heard, Asher Carruthers, Mathew Walne, Dominic Noble and Neil Cockburn, whilst Eleanor Smith achieved 4 A* grades.

GCSE
Not to be outdone by the A-level candidates, Year 11 students showed why the Cathedral School was ranked 24th nationally in the Independent newspaper’s GCSE league table last year.
66% of all grades achieved were either A* or A, and 85.7% of all exams taken were at least B grade or above. Six students achieved all A* grades. Lucy Mackie was awarded 12 A*s, while Ros Andrews, Pippa Glanville, Charlotte Payne and Helena Moore each got A*s in 11 subjects. Hannah Roper recieved 10 A* grades.
As in the A-Level examinations, the Cathedral School again achieved remarkable results in the traditionally ‘tough’ subjects of Mathematics, English and Science, while maintaining its strong tradition in the creative subjects of Art, Music and DT.
The headmaster, Paul Smith, was effusive in his praise, “I am delighted by these superb exam results which are testament to all the hard work of our students and staff. Our students have again demonstrated that they can excel in their studies whilst also participating in a wide variety of extra-curricular pursuits.”
