Battlefields 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Hooray!! The History Department will return to the battlefields of World War One in 2010. This will be an excellent opportunity for our Year 9 students to see for themselves where so many men lost thier lives and put what they have learnt in the classroom into action. The best way to understand any conflict is to walk the battlefield and that is exactly what we will be doing to gain a better understanding of the horrors of trench warfare. We cannot wait, so roll on 2010!

Historians in Moscow

A group of 35 students and four staff made the long trip out to St Petersburg, where temperatures of –7 degrees C greeted the party. Highlights here included; the Winter Palace, Palace Square, the Hermitage,  St Isaacs, Astoria Hotel, Kazan Cathedral, Peter and Paul Fortress, Peter and Paul Cathedral - the last resting place of the Russian Tsars, Cruiser Aurora, Smolney Institute, St Nicholas Cathedral, the Yusupov Palace, Rasputin Museum, walking on the Gulf of Finland, shopping on the Nevsky Prosspect and a dancing bear as well as a visit to the Nicholevsky Palace to take in a traditional Russian show before . .

Catching the overnight train to Moscow

In Moscow the pace did not let up and in many ways speeded up as the tourists took in Red Square, Lenin’s Mausoleum, Gum, Cathedral of Christ St Saviour, Arbat Street, the Metro Underground, Victory Square, the Kremlin, St Basils, heaps of traffic, lots of snow, Moscow v Siberia ice hockey, the revolution museum and traditional Russian food.

In total, only 4 Mc Donald’s meals were consumed during the whole trip – a world record for school pupils so I am told!

A fantastic trip and one made thoroughly worthwhile because it was a fully cross-curricular excursion. Not only did the History Department succeed in it’s aim of developing the subject matter from the classroom, but RE, modern foreign languages, English literature, geography, art, classics, science, IT, economics and mathematics all gained a tremendous amount from the visit.

All in all, a wonderful experience enjoyed to the max by students and teachers alike – see the Herefordian for the full report.
