What is the OH Fund?

What is the OH Fund and why does it exist?

“Bequest Kick Starts Fund."

Established in 1975 as the result of a bequest of £100,000 by Arthur Ulrich Zimmerman OH, the Fund is a charitable trust administered by up to 12 trustees appointed by the OH Club, with the express purpose of providing support for the school. This can take the form of purchases (such as buildings), bursaries, awards for specific projects and general financial assistance offered at the discretion of the Trustees.

The Quiet Man

A pupil at Hereford Cathedral School before the Great War (1902 - 1908), Arthur was a shy, unassuming man with no near family, he lived locally in Tarrington and was a keen supporter of HCS and of the OH Club.

Dying in 1963, his will revealed a bequest for the whole of his estate to be left to the OH Club to be used for the benefit of the School

“as the OH Club should think fit”.

The Club had to wait until 1975 to receive the funds as Arthur had kindly left a life interest in the income from his estate to two faithful retainers, his cook and his housekeeper. The Estate in 1963 was worth a ¼ million pounds a significant sum. Arthur had drafted his own will and it was unfortunately not as tax efficient as it might have been, so that when it finally came to the OH Club the estate had reduced to £100,000.

Three Decades On

The Fund is now worth an estimated £2.5 million. It owns several properties in Castle Street and Church Street and rents those properties to the School, which has helped the School adapt to changes in its offering (boarding to day, boys only to co-ed, the loss of Assisted Places) and to the changes in the facilities’ needs of educational establishments over the years.

In addition the Fund also helped the school finance the building of The Moat and the Sport Hall.

Each year the OH Fund ploughs a significant portion of its rental income back into the school by offering a number of, principally Sixth Form, bursaries and scholarships to enable talented young people to take up a place at HCS, who would not otherwise be able to afford the opportunities offered by the School. This funding offers opportunity and adds diversity to the School.

And Looking Ahead

The OH Fund will in the years ahead be looking to continue to fund Bursaries and Scholarships.
