Seventeen students achieve all A*s and A grades
Not to be outdone by the upper sixth students who last week broke all A-level records, Year 11 pupils at the Cathedral School have smashed all previous statistics with outstanding GCSE results.
While nearly a quarter of all candidates passed each of their eleven or twelve subjects with A* and A grades, it was Joshua Wooderson who achieved the remarkable feat of securing twelve A*s.
Results were particularly strong in maths, in which twenty-two pupils got top grades, not only in two GCSEs in the subject, but also two AS modules, usually reserved for sixth form students. These results followed on from a national award recently given to the Cathedral School’s maths department by The Good Schools Guide for the teaching of the subject at GCSE. Students also performed extremely well in traditional strengths such as the sciences and Latin, while they rose to the challenge of the International GCSE (IGCSE) in their English exams. James Petrie, the head of English, commented: “Top schools across the country are finding the English IGCSE to be a more rigorous and stimulating syllabus. I am delighted that our students have clearly relished the demands of the course and responded in such spectacular fashion.”
The A*/A rate of 64.4% means that almost two-thirds of all exams were achieved at the top two grades. 97.2% of all scripts were awarded grades A*-C, while all but one student achieved at least five top grades, including English and Maths. The average points per exam entry of 6.79 equates to an overall average grade of marginally below an A.
The headmaster, Mr Paul Smith, said “These are excellent results and I am delighted for the pupils, the staff who taught them and, of course, for the pupils’ parents who have every reason to be proud of their children’s achievements.”
