It used to be, you would give a teacher an apple to show your appreciation, but two Hereford Cathedral School pupils have gone a stage further and given their teacher an apple tree.

Departing Year 13 Leavers Elliot and Jarad followed this centuries old tradition and surprised Head of Economics Mr Jackson on their Leavers’ Day (May 20), requesting that the young tree be planted in the school gardens for everyone to enjoy.

The apple – which is also the symbol for Herefordshire -  has stood as a symbol for teachers and teaching for hundreds of years, with students giving a shiny fresh apple to their teacher on the first day of school to make the teacher feel appreciated and get the year off to a good start.

Mr Jackson, Hereford Cathedral School’s Head of Economics said,

“The tree was a real surprise, I have received the odd small gifts in the past, but an Apple Tree is a first for me. My thanks to Elliot and Jared.”

“It is going to take pride of place in the school gardens, so everyone will be able to enjoy it for years to come.”
