Hereford Cathedral School’s Boat Club, celebrated a great day of rowing last Saturday (November 13) by producing some fantastic results against the countries top rowing school’s.

Competing in the second biggest Junior Head event of the year, at the Pangbourne Junior Sculls, proved a real test for the Cathedral School students and helped to provide an early indication of their shape for the new season.

The 3km morning time trial saw both the Cathedral School crews raise their game, the boys Junior quad pushing Eton very hard all the way down the course, to record the second fastest time of the day out of the 300 different boats racing, narrowly losing by a mere three seconds.

Our other morning entry was the Girls J16 double scull of Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne and Laura Mansfield, who produced an astonishing performance to win their event by one second, beating in the process some established school and club crews.

The double and the quad beat all of our local rivals, from Monmouth School and Ross Rowing Club, as well as crews from Eton, Marlow, St Edwards School and a plethora of others.

In the afternoon, the boy’s quad divided up into single sculls, where the standout performances were achieved by Simon George, finishing 7th overall in the 29 strong Junior singles field, and Ben Jones who matched Simon’s 7th place in the 32 strong J17 event. Our other scullers of Ben Pratt and Dave Smith continue to improve producing solid performances in the middle of the pack.

Ric Colborne, Hereford Cathedral School’s Rowing Coach said:

“Today’s performances were magnificent and produced our best results so far.”
