Haydn_Nelson_Mass_Image_3weOn Wednesday 30th March a large audience from across Herefordshire gathered in Hereford Cathedral to enjoy a stunning performance of Haydn’s ‘Nelson’ Mass.

The concert was directed and conducted by Mr David Evans, Director of Music at Hereford Cathedral School, and was supported by HCS and allpay. Pupils from fourteen schools across the county sang in the massed choir, including Hereford Cathedral School, Hereford Cathedral Junior School, Aylestone, Lady Hawkins, Madley Primary, Trinity Primary, St Mary’s RC, St Paul’s CE Primary, Bishops of Hereford Bluecoat, Fairfield, Mordiford CE Primary, Lugwardine Primary, Pembridge CE Primary and St Richard’s Preparatory.

The soloists were Lucy Bowen (Soprano), Patrick Dunachie (Counter Tenor), Ruairi Bowen (Tenor), Greg Swinford (Bass). The concert also included a performance by Hereford Cathedral School’s Symphony Orchestra of Wagner’s ‘Mastersingers Overture’ and Vaughan Williams ‘A Lark Ascending’, with a spell binding performance from soloist Hannah Roper.

The concert was an excellent showcase for Herefordshire’s talented young musicians. All of the soloists received well deserved standing ovations, and the Headmaster of Hereford Cathedral School, Paul Smith, said

“I am delighted that so many pupils from across the county and of varying ages have been given the opportunity to perform such an ambitious piece in the wonderful surroundings of Hereford Cathedral.”

There was a retiring collection for Christchurch Cathedral School in New Zealand, damaged by the recent earthquake.
