Hereford Cathedral School student, Hannah Roper, celebrated musical success recently as she was awarded the prestigious Philharmonia Orchestra / Martin Musical Scholarship Award for Under 25’s.

The award is made towards her studies with Rodney Friend, a world class virtuoso, with whom Hannah has studied since October 2009.

Talented Hannah gained the award and was made a ‘special category applicant,’ which is extremely unusual, and sees her join other Martin Music scholars including successful and noted violinists Jennifer Pike and Alina Ibragimova.

Practising several hours a day from the age of four, Hannah Roper has also achieved three Grade 8 Levels, - Violin, Singing and Practical Musicianship - a Diploma of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (DipABRSM), – which she achieved at the age of 13 – and sings in the Three Choirs Festival – the youngest member of the Festival Choir.

Following the Cathedral Student’s Scholarship, Hannah will now also join the finest musical students in the world, attending a masterclass in the French Alps at the end of July 2010.  During the two week event, the selected scholars will be taught by the world’s leading musicians in front of a paying audience.

Paul Smith, Hereford Cathedral School’s Headmaster said:

“My congratulations to Hannah, to be awarded such a scholarship is a remarkable achievement, and truly demonstrates her undeniable talent.”

“Hannah is extremely gifted musically, but also works extremely hard to develop these talents.  It is important to remember that alongside her intensive musical schedule, she also excels academically and artistically.”
