Five sixth form students from Hereford Cathedral School have been offered places at either Oxford or Cambridge Universities this year.
Two further pupils from the same year who recently moved to different schools, one in Switzerland and the other to Wellbeck Military Academy, have also secured offers to Oxford and Cambridge.
Cathedral School Headmaster, Mr Paul Smith, said:
“We are delighted for the five students, particularly as the competition for such places is so keen. To have 8% of our sixth form applicants receive an offer from Oxbridge Colleges is quite an achievement and reflects their hard work and commitment to study.”
“We are also delighted for the many other students who have secured excellent offers from their first choice university. Once again the benefits of small class sizes and small tutor groups has paid dividends.”
The Cathedral School is also celebrating the success of four students who trialled the new Extended Projects Qualification (EPQ). The new qualification, recognised by universities and employers, encourages students to undertake a project of their choosing and involves a public presentation of their study.
The four students between them gained three A* grades and one A.
Mr Eddie Falshaw who runs the EPQ programme at Hereford Cathedral School said:
“This is an extremely worthwhile, exciting and stimulating initiative, and I am delighted that trialling this new qualification has proved such a success.”
“The EPQ has certainly caught the imagination of other students at Hereford Cathedral School, as there are now many more undertaking the course.”
