A-Level-180811-HCS-1webHereford Cathedral School students recorded their best ever A Level results today, as an outstanding 24.3% of all grades were at an ‘A*’ level.  The school also celebrated an impressive 100% pass rate.

Over three-quarters (78.6%) of all grades achieved were at least a ‘B’ grade or above and 59% of all grades achieved were either ‘A*’ or ‘A’.

Out of 67 candidates, 39 achieved all ‘A*’-‘B’ grades, with 28 students gaining all ‘A*’–‘A’ grades, indicating why at least 90% of Hereford Cathedral School leavers will expect to attain places at their chosen universities.  Five pupils (8%) have also been accepted to either Oxford or Cambridge University this year.

Six students who achieved three or more ‘A*’grades were Charles Heard, Asher Carruthers, Mathew Walne, Dominic Noble and Neil Cockburn, whilst Eleanor Smith achieved 4 ‘A*’ grades.

The year was also particularly rewarding for a number of students who entered Hereford Cathedral School in the Sixth Form from other schools, including Anna Davies (St Mary’s School), Josh Walker (St Mary’s School), Anna Sherwood (Moreton Hall), Sophie Beckett (Monmouth Girls), Charlotte Bowler (Bishops School), and Chloe Gilbert (Greenhill School) and Charles Heard (Shrewsbury School) all of whom achieved excellent results.

As one of 250 leading independent schools in the UK and Republic of Ireland, Hereford Cathedral School demonstrated its high standard of teaching by maintaining consistently strong results in the traditionally ‘difficult’ subjects of Mathematics, English, Science, Latin, French and Philosophy & Ethics.  This year 9 of the school’s 23 subjects studied at A-Level witnessed 100% ‘A*’-‘B’ pass rates, with the HCS Philosophy & Ethics Department achieving an amazing 100% A* pass rate.

Hereford Cathedral School’s strong tradition in Art and Music was also maintained, with both achieving 100% ‘A*’–‘B’ pass rates.  A staggering 75% of all Art candidates achieved an ‘A*’ grade.

The AS results were also excellent with 64.8% of all grades achieved being either an ‘A’ or ‘B’.  43.6% of all grades were ‘A’.

Paul Smith, Hereford Cathedral School’s Headmaster said:

“I am delighted by these superb A-Level results which are testament to all the hard work of our students and staff.  Our students can all now proceed with confidence to the universities of their choice.”

“Our Sixth Form students have once again demonstrated the benefits of small class sizes, high expectations, and the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular pursuits.”
