A taste of Victorian London came to Hereford recently (June 29) as Hereford Cathedral School’s Lower School performed Alexa Romanes sensitive play ‘Dark River,’ in the school’s Powell Theatre.
Within simple settings, the Cathedral School students brilliantly portrayed the fortunes of the poorest in Victorian London, - from Mudlarks scouring the Thames, to Crossing Sweepers, Costers, Maids, Soup Sellers and Pickpockets looking to earn a pittance – convincingly developing their characters and the bonds that tie their friendship together.
Over three busy nights, the captivated audience were purposefully guided through this unsentimental journey and thoroughly enjoyed the well-worked play.
Lucy Zammit, Hereford Cathedral School’s Head of Drama said:
“I could see the students’ really enjoyed themselves and loved being on stage. Their enjoyment was infectious and made the play a real success.”
“I am delighted it went so well for everyone involved.”
