Regular listeners of BBC Radio 4’s long lasting Archers series will know that the children of recently deceased Nigel Pargetter and his widow Elizabeth have been preparing to sit the entrance examination for The Cathedral School.

What you might not know is that the assessment process for the Archers ‘Cathedral School’ is modelled on that of Hereford Cathedral School.    This is no coincidence, as Admissions Officer Mrs Selena Fortey was contacted by the popular radio series and asked about Hereford Cathedral School’s admissions process.

The admissions process at Hereford Cathedral School involves an interview with the Headmaster or some of his staff, an examination, and also requires candidates to bring an object that they can discuss.

Mr Paul Smith, Hereford Cathedral School’s Headmaster said

“We are keen to put our candidates at ease and do not want to rely solely on an examination.   Prospective pupils bring a whole range of items from photographs, costumes worn in plays, musical instruments, cricket bats to coin collections and much more.   It gives us a good starting point from which to find out what interests and inspires the candidates and also means that they feel much more at ease when they sit the entrance assessments at a later date.”

“I am delighted that the Cathedral School’s process has been modelled by Felpersham Cathedral School – we shall wait with interest to see if Lily and Freddie Pargetter decide to attend or whether the storyline dictates they go elsewhere.”
