Hereford Cathedral School, in conjunction with Activate Sport and the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy 2011, welcomed former England international cricketer Vikram Solanki to Wyeside today (June 25), for attending Herefordshire cricketers to learn from the local sporting hero.
Organised by The Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy 2011, founded by Freddie Flintoff, Vikram (standing in for Freddie) enthralled the 50 young boys and girls, during his question and answer session, as well as throughout his tips and advice.
Vikram Solanki also took the time while at Hereford Cathedral School’s sports fields to bat, bowl and field with and against the enthusiastic children. An opportunity the attendees made the most of, all vying to get the former Worcestershire CCC Captain out – a feat that some achieved! A notable catch at slip coming to mind.
Today, was the first day of the five day Flintoff Academy happening in Hereford, and if today is anything to go by, the rest of the week is sure to be an exceptional and enjoyable occasion for everyone in attendance.
Vikram Solanki, former England International Cricketer said:
“It’s great to be in Hereford and to see so many children being active and enjoying the game of cricket from an early age.”
“With the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy, we aim to get as many youngsters as possible introduced to cricket in an enjoyable way.”
“I grew up watching my father play, and started playing at around 11, many of the children here are far younger than I was when I started, and it’s a good early start for them.”
“Who knows perhaps the next Freddie is here in Hereford today.”
Freddie Flintoff said that “the West of England has always been a great area for developing cricketers” and that his “Academy aims to continue this in the future.” From what I saw, Herefordshire’s young boys and girls did not disappoint the England legend.
