HCS-GCSE-4Hereford Cathedral School students recorded their best ever GCSE results today, as 35.5% of all grades were at an A* level.  The school also celebrated over a fifth of students receiving all A* to A grades.

85.7% of all grades achieved were at least a ‘B’ grade or above and 66% of all grades achieved were either ‘A*’ or ‘A.’

Out of 75 candidates, 16 students gained all ‘A*’–‘A’ grades, with 100% of candidates securing at least 5 ‘A*’ to ‘C’ grades.  One third of candidates attained at least five or more ‘A*’ grades.

Six students achieved all ‘A*’ grades. Remarkably Lucy Mackie was awarded 12 'A*s', while Ros Andrews, Pippa Glanville, Charlotte Payne, and Helena Moore each got ‘A*s’ in 11 subjects. Hannah Roper received 10 ‘A*’ grades.

As in the record HCS A-Level results last week, the school again achieved remarkable results in the traditionally ‘tough’ subjects of Mathematics, English and Science, for example  95.1% of Chemistry students gained an ‘A*’ – ‘A’ grade, 92.7% gained an ‘A*’ to ‘A’ in Biology and 82.9% in Physics.  This year 75% of all subjects improved on their previous year’s results with 10 of the school’s GCSE Departments witnessing 100% ‘A*’-‘C’ pass rates – six of these achieving 100% three years running.  The Latin Department witnessed a massive 83.3% of candidates receiving an ‘A*’ grade. In addition, 23 pupils took their GCSE mathematics exam a year early and each pupil obtained an ‘A*’, one pupil attaining 199 marks out of a possible 200.

Hereford Cathedral School’s strong tradition in creative subjects was also maintained, with Drama & Theatre Studies, Design Technology and Music all achieving 100% ‘A*’–‘C’ pass rates.  A staggering 50% of all Art candidates achieved an ‘A*’ grade, with 80% of Music students gaining an ‘A’ grade or above.

Paul Smith, Hereford Cathedral School’s Headmaster said:

“These are excellent results and I am delighted for the students, the staff and, of course, the students’ parents.”

“This years results continue the pattern set by our A-Level students last week, and further support our status as the leading school in Herefordshire and one of the leading schools in the country.”

“I look forward to welcoming back these successful pupils as part of our Sixth Form and also opening our doors to the many new faces joining us from other schools across the Marches.”
