AIMS

This exciting new A Level is designed to:

  • Enable students to focus on the dynamic nature of the contemporary business world
  • Provide opportunities for research into topical business issues
  • Offer opportunities for the development and application of a full range of academic skills including numeracy, communication, problem solving and team work
  • Explore real business situations
  • Be practical in the application of business concepts
  • Understand the role of the entrepreneur and business in society

OUTLINE

At AS Level, this specification introduces students to the challenges and issues of starting a business, including financial planning. It then focuses on how established businesses might improve their effectiveness by making tactical decisions at a functional level:

Unit 1 Planning and Financing a Business


This unit provides students with an introduction to the scope of Business Studies within the context of starting a new business. You will be expected to have an understanding of the range of activities involved in setting up a small business, including:

  • The role of enterprise
  • Generating and Protecting Business Ideas
  • Transforming Resources into Goods and Services
  • Conducting Start-up Market Research
  • Understanding Markets
  • Choosing the Right Legal Structure for the Business
  • Locating the Business
  • Employing People

Unit 2 Managing a Business

This unit looks at how businesses are routinely run after the set up stage. The unit covers a wide range of functions within a business with an emphasis on how they each contribute to the overall success of the firm.

  • Measuring the effectiveness of a workforce
