Welcome to the HCS Economics Department webpage! As a department we are totally committed to promoting students’ interest and enthusiasm for this real world subject which is increasingly recognised as being an invaluable discipline in developing an understanding of the world in which we live. Whether it is explaining the impact of a rise in world oil prices on mortgage bills or gaining an understanding of how developing countries can promote faster growth, economics lies at the heart of such discussions.
As well as offering GCSE and A level Economics, the department also contributes to the lower school curriculum through the Year 7 Hereford Curriculum course, where students are given a simple introduction to economic issues both locally and internationally. Whilst we are invariably delighted with our students’ performance in external exams, we nonetheless accept that league tables do not tell the full story! As well as aiming to get the very best possible result for every single student, we also aim to develop a genuine interest in this subject which many students aim to further develop at undergraduate level.
Outside the classroom, the department offers a wide range of activities. As well as numerous revision sessions and subject clinics, Mr Jackson offers a popular series of talks entitled ‘The Great Economists’ looking at a range of famous economists from Adam Smith through to Marx and Keynes. In addition, Sixth Form economists have the opportunity to enter the Bank of England’s Target 2.0 competition (more details below) and lower school pupils can take part in the ‘Millionaires’ Club’ run by the Sixth Form which has proved to be a fun way of developing students’ interest in the subject.
We also run several trips, with Year 10 students visiting the Bank of England in June 2008 and plans already in hand for a return to New York in October 2009 following the highly successful trip in 2004.
As we hope you can see, we could not disagree more strongly with those who believe that economics is “the dismal science”!!
