LVI in Snowdonia March 2009 PDF Print E-mail

The A level residential course took place in Snowdonia Friday 6th - Monday 9th March.

The Department took fourteen LVI students to Rhyd-y-Creuau for a long weekend to enjoy Geography in the great outdoors of Wales. It was an intensive week carrying out four fieldwork investigations including, Glaciation, Rural Settlements, Hydrology and Tourism. We were fortunate to see snow on the peaks which added to their attraction and despite the cold conditions all pupils worked extremely hard, achieving an enormous amount in a short space of time.

A Level Conference

On the 24th February a Geography conference took place in the Zimmerman Hall. It was organised by Mr Terry, Head of the VI form. Geographers from Monmouth Girls and Hereford College also attended. There were two speakers; Dr Bryn Hubbard from Aberystwyth University gave a lecture on Climate Change and its Effects. It was a very well presented and interesting lecture. It highlighted the scale of the physical change that has happened and is continuing to happen on our planet.

The second lecture was about Urban Redevelopment in Cardiff Bay. The lecture was given by Mr Hayden Jones who is involved in the Bay’s redevelopment with Knight Frank. He is also a governor at H.C.S. and gave an in-depth and friendly lecture on the development process and the economic issues of the bay.

Both lectures were very relevant to the current A level topics and on behalf of the students I would like to thank the geography department for arranging the lectures and the lecturers for giving up their afternoon to come and speak to us. It was very much appreciated.
