Katy Moran visits HCS on 8th November 2011 PDF Print E-mail

Why not try a new author this half term, and then meet her in person on the 8th November?

Katy is a local author (she lives in Ludlow) and her book Spirit Hunter was long-listed for the prestigious Carnegie prize.  She will talk to students who have English lessons on a Tuesday (some Y7, Y8, Y9 and Y10 on that day) and will meet Book Club over lunch.

Please see Mrs Nelson or Ms Adamson if you are interested in meeting Katy, and are not in any of these groups.

Here are more details about her books, so you can all have a read over half term.

Bloodline

Bloodline will take you back to the distant past of the British Isles – a bloody tangle of warring kingdoms and tribes, where trees, animal and people live in closer harmony, and loyalty is everything. War threatens, and Essa is thrown headlong into a mess that threatens the lives of everyone he loves. He is just a halfbreed, son of a wandering Briton song-man in a land where the power of the Anglish settlers is rising – can he really do anything to stop the bloodshed? Swearing loyalty to both sides is a dangerous way to try…  For Y8-Y9

Bloodline‘This highly promising first novel has echoes of Sutcliff and Tolkien. As well as powerful story-telling, care and attention is paid to recreating everything from patterns of speech to a whole way of life.’ Publishing News

‘Well written and deeply researched, Bloodline moves along at a steady pace with enough intrigue and mystery to keep readers turning pages. It is a wonderful story of emotional and physical discovery that reads with “you are there” immediacy.’ School Library Journal – Starred review

Bloodline Rising

Bloodline Rising is set in the ancient city of Constantinople – decadent, beautiful and filthy, it’s the perfect territory for a cunning thief and gang-leader like the Ghost… Skilled at lying and deceit, able to move more silently than a shadow – how will the Ghost use his powers? Is he a hero or a villain, or both?  For Y8 – Y9

Bloodline Rising

‘An excellent, well written novel that makes a lasting impression’ Books for Keeps

This terrific tale will whiz you through the streets of Constantinople in the Dark Ages, where you’ll run into cunning criminals, notorious thieves and a ruthless barbarian assassin. Yikes!’ National Geographic Kids

Spirit Hunter

Spirit Hunter is the story of a powerful love forged between two sworn enemies. On the dangerous Silk Road – the age-old trade route that runs all the way from Europe to China – a young woman, Asena, is captured by a Shaolin devotee, Swiftarrow. Asena is taken to the ancient city of Chang’an, where she is forced to begin her life anew and learn the ways of the Shaolin. But just as love blossoms between Asena and her captor, a deadly political game threatens to ruin not only their feelings for each other, but also their lives.  For Y8 –Y10

Dangerous to Know

Dangerous to Know is a modern-day love story for the festival-going generation. Jack and Bethany are teenagers in love. There’s only one problem: Jack’s family has a dark past, and whilst he and Bethany are desperate to be together, Bethany’s family is desperate to keep them apart. When Jack and Bethany defy their parents and head for the summer festivals, no one is prepared for the emotional upheaval involved.  For Y10 – Y13

Marvellous mysteries in the making! PDF Print E-mail

‘Whodunnit’ mysteries fascinate all ages, and hundreds of children from local schools had a chance to learn about their particular favourites, when they met Caroline Lawrence, author of The Roman Mysteries.  Caroline’s series is set in Ancient Rome and has recently been televised on CBBC.  She outlined the 7 steps to great storytelling, as used by Hollywood film producers today.  Her entertaining breakdown of current films and the way they use classical characters was very revealing.  She also uses Roman artefacts to help her construct her plots and the clues in each mystery.  No-one there will forget her sponge-on-a-stick artefact and her hilarious explanations!

Pupils from HCS, HCJS, The Elms, Weobley Primary and St. John’s-on-the-Hill filled the sports hall for this event organised by the Library and Classics Department.  After her talk and refreshments, books were on sale for £1 each and Caroline signed over 300 books for pupils during her stay.  The local press attended and Radio Wyvern ran an interview with Caroline during the day.

Cathy Cassidy to visit Hereford PDF Print E-mail

On 1st July 2009, well-known author Cathy Cassidy came to Hereford, courtesy of Waterstones bookshop, and Puffin

Children’s author Cathy Cassidy travelled from her home in Scotland to visit Hereford Cathedral School on Wednesday 1st July. Pupils from Y7 and some Y8 helpers hosted the event for visiting pupils from Bishop’s, HCJS and St. James’ schools.

Cathy talked about her career and her inspirations, read extracts from her latest book and answered some ‘excellent questions’ from the audience. Waterstones provided a bookshop so that Cathy’s fans could get their    favourite book signed. While they queued patiently, there were activities to keep everyone happy—creating dream flags and making friendship bracelets. “It was a fantastic event” commented Emily Fielder ... “Cathy Cassidy inspired me to carry on my dream” said Bethany Taylor Neville.
