September 2012 saw the first meeting of The Abel Set. Co-founded by Mr Taylor and Mr Priday, the aim of the group (which meets at 1.20pm on Tuesday lunchtimes in Room F) is to give those who want to read Mathematics at University, and those who enjoy the subject, the chance to see and talk about ideas beyond the specification. Although early meetings have included some problem solving - see below - there are plans to see how pineapples are related to rabbits and Leonardo of Pisa!
The Abel Set has a kernel of dedicated members, but anyone with an interest in maths is welcome to turn up.
Now take a look at this...
1. Blob(a+1,b) = Blob(a,b) + b + 1
2. Blob(a,0) = a
3. Blob(a,b) = Blob(b,a)
Using the 3 rules above, calculate Blob(12,5)
Answer available from Mr Taylor

Dates for 2012-13
Senior Mathematical Challenge - 6th November 2012
Intermediate Mathematical Challenge - 7th February 2013
Junior Mathematical Challenge - 25th April 2013
Pupils from our higher sets always enjoy entering the UK Mathematical Trust's Mathematics Challenges, organised by Mrs Pattison. Each year, many pupils win gold, silver and bronze certificates. Mr Taylor organises extra sessions for those who qualify for further rounds of the competition.
Teams are sent to the various Team Challenge competitions, where our pupils get to compete in various events (including relays!) against the best mathematicians from other schools. Mr Priday has been known to treat the team to chips on the way home!
