Marches 7s Chairman’s Report - 2012 PDF Print E-mail

Marches-7s-2012-photoHereford Cathedral School’s Marches 7s 2012, supported by allpay, was without doubt a fantastic success, 32 schools from all over England and Wales provided a large crowd and a festival of rugby.

The weather was perfect and people walking about in sun glasses, polo shirts and eating ice cream made the day a great spectacle.

This was the first time the Marches 7s had been changed, the tournament had been the same format since 1977 and the decision to expand was not taken lightly, but the feed back from teams, coaches, staff and supporters has all been extremely positive.

The general standard of rugby was very impressive and the crowd was entertained with some extremely competitive group matches, RGS Worcester and Hartbury drawing 12 all, Barnard Castle edging out Glantaf 21-19 and Wycliffe scoring late to beat Brecon 14-7.

The knock out stages produced some thrilling rugby, Hartbury beating Llandovery 21-19 in the Cup, Wycliffe winning 22-19 against Plymouth and Colston’s recording a victory over Solihull in the Bowl.  Millfield and Coleg Sir Gar emerged out of the Cup semi-finals, Adams and Monmouth competed in the Plate Final and Bedford had Colstons as their opponents in the Bowl Final.

Monmouth emerged victorious over Adams, 21-19 to win the ‘Plate’, with Colstons scoring early and recording a 28-12 victory over Bedford to win the ‘Bowl’.

The Cup Final was contested between Millfield and Coleg Sir Gar and produced a high quality, competitive game of Sevens. Sir Gar scored first and controlled the ball for the majority of the first half.  Millfield came back strongly in the second half but could not penetrate their opponent’s impressive defence, seeing Coleg Sir Gar emerge as Hereford Cathedral School’s Marches 7s 2012 winners with a 26-21 victory.

I would like to thank allpay, Hereford Cathedral School, The Old Herefordians’ Club, the pupils and staff from the visiting schools, the Marches 7s Committee, Gloucester RFC, Scott Quinnell,  the referee’s and the Hereford Cathedral School PTA for all their support and hard work.
