General Studies

on-the-road-webThe objective of General Studies in the Sixth Form is to broaden and enrich the curriculum. Subjects are offered which are outside the academic profile of many students and are designed to provide them with a sound base of general knowledge and skills, which will be transferable later in life. The subjects are non-examined and taught by members of staff and by professional specialists working in a range of employment categories.

The programme has been planned according to the students’ interests. The courses are run for either 4-week or 12- week blocks.

Some of the courses are designed to allow students the opportunity to gain additional qualifications. The Outdoor Education package leads to a canoeing certificate and a rock climbing and walking proficiency certificate. The Sports Leadership Award and cricket coaching will provide students with a qualification to organise or assist in running a sport expedition.

Others are either interest periods or career-based options such as the Medical Profession and Veterinary Science where students will be provided with the opportunity to discuss issues with a practitioner and visit treatment centres. The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is not only a qualification but will provide students with extra UCAS points.

The range of optional topics include:

Art Appreciation / Outdoor Education / Basic Expedition Leaders Award / Photoshop / Chinese / Politics and Current Affairs / Conversational Spanish / Self Defence / Cricket Coaching / Sewing Skills / Debating / Sports Leadership Award / European Computer Driving Licence / The Medical Profession / Ethics and Religion / Veterinary Science / First Aid / Golf / UCAS Course Selection / Hereford Cathedral School on the Road! / UCAS Website / Journalism /  UCAS Personal Statement / Netball Coaching

Personal, Social and Health Citizenship Education (PSHCE)

Throughout the Sixth Form PSHCE is regarded as an important component in providing students with advice on a range of issues which relate to them. The course relies heavily on professionally trained experts who have the knowledge to provide accurate and up-to-date information. A series of classroom-based discussion sessions operate on a rota basis in the Lower Sixth providing students with the opportunity to gain advice on a large range of issues, for example, alcoholism, eating disorders etc.

Key role lectures are also provided which tend to be provided by individuals who have experienced life changing events and who can convey their advice through example.
