HCS Chapel Choir return to St Paul's Cathedral to lead choral Evensong

Hereford Cathedral School Chapel Choir had the unforgettable opportunity to sing in one of the most magnificent buildings in London in the week before half term.

More than 40 HCS pupils were invited to lead choral Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral, conducted by the School’s Director of Music, Mr David Evans.

The sound was exquisite as they performed in front of a congregation of around 300. Together they sang Noble in B minor, Charles Wood's O Thou the Central Orb and Smith five-part Preces and Responses.

It is more than two years since HCS Chapel Choir last led evensong at St Paul’s in October 2019, when pupils were accompanied by then-Year 13 organist Michael D’Avanzo OH, who is now organ scholar at Southwell Minster, and from September will be reading Music at Cambridge University, with an organ scholarship at Jesus College.

Commenting on the memorable day, Mr Evans said: “[This was] an occasion which made memories for the students involved. The choir really gave their best and raised the stakes. This is what real education is about, and hopefully an experience that they will never forget. It was lovely to be welcomed so warmly and appreciated by staff and clergy at St Paul's.”

Year 12 music scholar, Isabel D, said: “It was incredible to be given the opportunity to sing in such a magnificent cathedral, with such a wonderful acoustic. Thank you very much to Mr Evans, Mr Semple and to all the staff who made this unforgettable experience possible.”

Alice A (Year 12) said: “I had a wonderful time performing with my fellow choir members and I am honoured to be able to perform at St Paul’s.”

Headmaster Dr Gray, who was in London for the event, tweeted: “Wonderful to be at @StPaulsLondon today with @HerefordCS Chapel Choir who led choral Evensong. They sang superbly and were great ambassadors for the School.”
