Teacher of Physics

September 2020

Location: Hereford   Description: Full time and permanent

Hereford Cathedral School seeks to appoint a full-time teacher of Physics from September 2020. Applicants must be able to teach up to and including GCSE and A Level Physics. The post will suit a high-calibre graduate, either an NQT or more experienced teacher, with the enthusiasm, energy and commitment to really inspire their pupils.

The Physics Department, which currently consists of two full time members of teaching staff, one part time member, and an experienced technician, is very successful and well-resourced.

Physics is a popular subject in the Sixth Form, with students following the OCR Advancing Physics course (specification B) with its emphasis on the application of Physics. Currently we have 20 students in Year 12, taught in two sets, and 9 students in Year 13, taught in one set.  In the last five years, 69% of all grades achieved have been A*- B.

Outside of lessons, the Physics department runs a wide range of activities.  Our Arduino electronics club is open to all ages and meets once a week.  Current projects include a computer-controlled car, an obstacle-avoiding robot and an LED array that responds to music.   We run a biennial trip to the CERN laboratories in Geneva and a biennial trip to the Science Live A-level Physics event. Our most able A-level students are entered into the British Physics Olympiad AS-level challenge, and the competition paper in Year 13.  We also run occasional outreach events for local primary school pupils.

In addition to academic teaching, the successful candidate will also be asked to contribute fully to the pastoral and extra-curricular life of the school. They will need to have first rate interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well and communicate effectively with pupils, colleagues and parents. In addition, energy, vision and high expectations are essential qualities for this position. An ability to teach another subject, although perhaps useful, is not essential.

The School follows DfE recognised arrangements leading to NQT status and has considerable success in supporting new teachers in their Induction Year.

Candidates who would be interested in residential roles with the School’s Boarding House are also encouraged to apply.
