On Saturday 10 May, Hereford Cathedral School’s Music Department was honoured to welcome Sir John Rutter to lead a Come & Sing Day — the finale of our Music Makers Series 2024–25.
One of the country’s most celebrated composers and conductors, Sir John is Director of the Cambridge Singers and founder of the Collegium record label. He led 180 singers from across the UK and beyond in a day of choral exploration at Holy Trinity Church, Hereford.
The varied repertoire included several of Sir John’s own compositions, a specially written arrangement of the hymn tune Hereford by Samuel Sebastian Wesley (a former organist at Hereford Cathedral), as well as music ranging from Gregorian plainchant to modern folk adaptations.
Throughout the day, Sir John shared entertaining anecdotes from his illustrious career, making the experience not only musically enriching but also full of warmth and humour. It was a day to remember for singers of all ages.
