Year 11 pupils at Hereford Cathedral School enjoyed a glimpse of life beyond GCSEs as they took part in the School’s Sixth Form Experience Day.

The event gave pupils the chance to sign up for A-Level and BTEC taster sessions of their choice and spend the day exploring a wide range of subjects with HCS’s specialist teaching staff.

In Biology, pupils used the School’s new digital microscopes to investigate plasmolysis in plant cells, while in Physics, they explored simple harmonic motion to calculate a value for gravity. In Drama, they worked in pairs to recreate real-life speech through the medium of verbatim theatre.

Mr Howell introduced pupils to the impressive facilities in the Design & Technology Department, and in Art, pupils experimented with wax resist techniques and had a go at batik. Meanwhile in History, pupils examined the causes and impact of revolutions through the lens of a fictional political and economic crisis, considering how authoritarian leaders rise to power.

As well as subject sessions, the day included an introduction to the wide-ranging support offered to Sixth Formers at HCS. Pupils heard about the opportunities available through sport, Soc Com and Sixth Form trips, and Head of Futures Mrs Jackson spoke to them about the tailored support on offer for those applying to Oxbridge or aiming for careers in medicine, veterinary science or dentistry.

And of course, pupils got to enjoy their break and lunch in Café 1384 – a true perk of Sixth Form life at HCS!
